3rd On Line, Curriculum Development

Hi Class,

Please reflect on the topic, "Is Philippine education really deteriorating?"

1. Choose a particular level (elementary, secondary, tertiary) and a specific subject area (Math, Science, English, etc.) as a point of reference.
2. In your own experiences as a student:
a. In what component/s of your curriculum, do you find some difficulties or
weaknesses? Identify at least 2.
Goals and Objectives
Curriculum Content
Curriculum Experiences
Curriculum Evaluation
b.Describe the weaknesses or difficulties.
c. Are there solutions to these conditions? What do you propose?

I think the weakness on our economics curriculum is that the curriculum experience (we only learned how to compute for the demand and supply, the history of economics and some objective type information but we didn’t learn how to analyze the economic status of the country. Which for me is the most important aspect in a economics subject. It’s the application of all the things weve learned that lacks in our curriculum. Would you know if the PSEI rate is good or not? I only knew this when my friend explained it to me. )
In curriculum evaluation, what comes to my mind is how the teacher evaluate the learning of the students. Well for me, evaluation fails because as I remembered all my exams in economics are all computation and objective type of exams, well may be it evaluates what we learned but it never evaluate the applicability of the content. You knew high school back then, memorization is the key to passing all your exams. 

    c. Are there solutions to these conditions? What do you propose?

I think yes, there are solutions. I may suggest that in whatever curriculum, educator should always include the applicability in real life of our subject content. So that learning experience will be realistic. Just like what a philosopher said, make mathematics as fun as shopping do.

  2. 1. secondary, physics.

    2. (a and b)
Goals and objectives - because it seems the lesson was not clear to students about its everyday application. Most of the lessons are useless unless it will be applied in everyday life.

Curriculum content - because some of the lessons need not to be included as it does not apply in everyday application like mirror reflection and refraction. There are other lessons in physics that can be taught that will be beneficial to students.

    c. There are solutions to my answer above and it is very simple. Just make the objectives clearer to students of how beneficial to them of the lesson to be taught. The goals should be specific in what to achieve and how it will apply to their life.
The other weakness' solution is to carefully evaluate the curriculum as to what lessons be taught by the teachers.Teachers should think what will be most beneficial and useful to the students.

    English, secondary

    Curriculum experiences
    Goals and objectives

b.Curriculum experiences - because students never actually practiced what they learned in this subject until college or applying for a job.
Goals and objectives - it is just a weakness since all students really don't see the importance of the lesson until they need to use or apply what they were taught.

c.Are there solutions to these conditions? What do you propose?

Yes. First is to let the students experience first hand on the application of what they were taught. Only science subjects and home economics can the students have the chance to practice or apply the lesson. It is better for english teachers to let the students practice their lesson as well. And if the students already applied the english lesson, they wil surely know the importance of the subject, therefor making the goals and objectives attainable.

-Curriculum content and Goals and objective

    2. Curriculum Content
-because there some topics I'm sure not part of the curriculum. (In my experience, my teacher kept on teaching us about "sabong". There are that is not important and there are important topics that is not included.)

    Goals and objectives
    - It is not clear. Maybe there are goals and objectives but not followed.

-Yes, there's always solution. for me is for the teacher, no matter how good the curriculum is, it is up for the teacher how will they teach the subject. Curriculum contains goals, objectives, experiences and evaluation, that's why it should be follow.

  5. "Is Philippine education really deteriorating?"
-Yes..our economy of today is a living proof.
    1. Choose a particular level (elementary, secondary, tertiary) and a specific subject area (Math, Science, English, etc.) as a point of reference.
    -elementary English
I do believe that formative years of the student is being cultivated in these levels. It is the training ground in achieving a quality education that will enable them to face the society.Teaching and learning process will be more effective if only...educators will be more trained in enhancing their strategies in teaching the English subject in particular.

    Curriculum Experiences
    -lack of individual participation
    Curriculum Evaluation
-locked in a paper and pencil exam, rather an out of the box kind of test.

  6. -It will be better to implement individual evaluation in using the language rather than by groups. These will help the students by learning in their own experiences and also for the teacher's effectiveness of his/her own strategy in using the material.
    e.g.
    -declamations/monologue
    -one on one interviews
    -reporting

  7. In my opinion, education in the Philippines is NOT deteriorating. Curriculum has nothing to do with it. Private schools are adjusting by providing materials that their students will need to exemplify their intellectual capacity. As to the public schools, the government also provide the students their school paraphernalias to enhance their skills and intellect. Before executing the curriculum, the school have made extensive research and analized that these subjects are appropriate to the children. I think the problem exists with the teaching method used by the teacher. If he has not mastered the subject area, then that will be a problem.

The solution would be to choose the right teachers for the right subjects, and another resort would be to provide seminars and lectures for the teachers to better explain and execute their respective subject areas.

  8. Please reflect on the topic, "Is Philippine education really deteriorating?"
I believe the Philippine education is deteriorating. This was once a country known for their good English skills in oral as well as written. But looking at this country now, not a lot of people are as fluent and efficient as they were before.

    1. Tertiary – Exceptional Psychology

    2. a. Goals and Objectives
    Curriculum Content

    b. A clear outline of what was meant to be learned or what we were supposed to know wasn’t really established. At the end of the day, it just seemed like we were sitting in class to take up time because it didn’t feel like any information was retained. Not enough of curriculum content was given to make us feel like we were actually doing something, it felt more like games the whole time instead of knowledge, since all lessons were reported by fellow students. One cannot expect to retain much if the speaker isn’t efficient or effective. So, at the end of the day, all the lessons seemed mashed up since we really couldn’t distinguish what was what. Hand outs were not given on time, neither was the clear objectives given out even if we were to do self-study.

    c. What probably could’ve been done is, the professor could’ve either done an activity before or after the class to either prepare the students for the lesson or make recollection easier. The professor should always recap or correct the students on the spot if reporting is insisted. Professors should go over what students will present to ensure the validity of the information that they are passing on to sponge-like minds.
I propose that objectives and goals be written clearly. This would help visual learners as well as others clarify with the teacher and themselves if they have truly grasped or understood what is needed in the particular lesson.
To ensure curriculum content, it would be helpful for teachers to provide as well revise what students have prepared.

  9. 1. Art Appreciation – Humanities; Tertiary level

2a-b. I find the curriculum experiences component of its curriculum to be its weakness, since there were not much exposure and experience on the tangible artworks of the artists. Another weakness is the goals and objectives, most of the students that aren't taking up arts question its presence in the curriculum since it's not related to science courses.

    c. Yes, definitely there are solutions to these above mentioned weaknesses. Since the subject deals with the famous artists and their masterpieces, integrating a trip to the museum would help the students appreciate the works of the artists being studied. Using more visual materials in class is also a good addition, and the use of technology, like using virtual trips to the famous classical or victorian structures and landmarks.
Regarding the goals and objectives, explaining to the students that it is essential for their holistic growth, that they should be well-rounded individuals would be a good start.

  10. Is Philippine education deteriorating? This question is always the center of debate for quite sometime now. In my point of view, yes it is. In fact, over the past 30 years (since I attended school), the health of public education in the Philippines has been deteriorating. In addition, the country is 2nd to the last in the South-East Asian region in terms of the quality of education.
In public urban elementary and high schools, the classroom is jam-packed with 60- 70 students. As you go in the far-flung areas, you can see and feel how education became the least priority of the government.
Either urban or rural, most schools lack classrooms, no chairs or tables, lack of updated books, lack of laboratory room and materials, or even worse, no class at all (you see some students study under a tree). Either public or private school, they lack sophisticated laboratories and facilities to cater the needs of the students. Many schools are still lacking the basic computer laboratories. This is sad, because students nowadays are expected to be computer literate to be marketable and competitive in the global world.

    1. Mathematics and Science
These subjects are lacking in substance. They should be taught comprehensively and intensively as the other countries are doing. These core subjects serves as the backbone of the country’s development in the near future.

    2. A and B
    Goals and Objectives
    Curriculum Content

Because most lessons are not properly addressed to students. There is no direct efforts in giving clear and understandable information that could help students learn effectively. Also, curriculum content is often at odds with the needs of the learners and not enough for a more competitive in the modern world. The curriculum is systematically watered down for the “benefit” of students.

    3. Yes. As a parent, student, teacher or community, we have to work together to make the quality of education in the Philippines match the same quality of education that other countries has to offer. Filipinos are really talented and smart. All we need is good education to hone the talents and to learn more so we can be more competitive once again, in the global community.
